Intro to Permaculture

We talked last day about the fact that the world has about 60 years left of farmable fertile soil (due to the affects of mass agriculture).

What is the solution? One idea: permaculture?

Permaculture is a set of design principles centered on

whole systems thinking, simulating, or directly utilizing the

patterns and resilient features observed in natural

ecosystems. It uses these principles in a growing number of

fields from regenerative agriculture, re-wilding, and

community resilience.

Discussion:

What is a syntropic farming?

Syntropic farming is an intensive form of agroforestry that

imitates slash and mulch agroforestry, in order to provide

yields at all stages of succession,

generate its own fertility, and with the end goal of creating a

productive forest that imitates

the structure and function of the native forests.

What is a food forest?

A food forest, also called a forest garden, is a diverse

planting of edible plants that

attempts to mimic the ecosystems and patterns found in

nature

Discussion:

What is a food desert?

What does the speaker mean by "food is the

problem and the solution."
